Chairperson Chou Shui-Mei of Taiwan Commercial District Tourism Development Federation
Innovating Taiwan's local commercial district industries and bringing them to the international stage
The internationally renowned "Beitou Sweetme Hot Spring Resort," located in Beitou's hot spring district in Taiwan, was fully renovated under Chairperson Chou Shui-Mei's leadership in 2001, combining Eastern elegant ambiance with modern premium facilities, and has been carefully managed into one of the representative international hot spring hotels.
Always speaking softly and elegantly, Chou Shui-Mei possesses an incredibly determined gaze and vision. She believes there are no shortcuts in business - only steady, step-by-step progress. Before managing the hotel, she was already a successful figure in the construction industry. She stated: "After taking over Sweetme Resort, I immediately learned people-oriented service and management. I believe that with dedication, no problem is insurmountable. Later, I was elected Chairperson of the Beitou Hot Spring Association by industry peers. Although I faced enormous doubts and challenges, I overcame them one by one with dedication."
With her unique resilience and sincere communication skills, Chou Shui-Mei sought advice and learned diligently everywhere, often turning resistance into support. Through her sincerity and dedication, those who initially doubted her turned around to support, affirm, and assist her, continuously building local commercial district cohesion and trust.
Subsequently, Chou Shui-Mei was recommended to serve as Chairperson of the Taipei Hot Spring Development Association, Chairperson of the Taiwan Asia-Pacific International Hot Spring Tourism Association, and other positions. She actively participates in discussions within every organization, encouraging collective creativity while connecting commercial district energies for the international stage. For example, in 2011, the collaborative "Portable Shrine Clash" event with Ehime Prefecture held in Beitou made front-page news across major Taiwanese media and multiple international media outlets the next day, establishing the Taipei Hot Spring Festival as an international brand.
Firmly believing in the spirit that "only through earnest effort will others take you seriously; only through integrity will others believe in you," she was recommended as Chairperson of the Taipei Commercial District Industry Federation. Over five years, she participated in over 2,000 domestic and international events, creating different marketing themes every year with spectacular results. Because Chou Shui-Mei never considers personal interests but focuses entirely on overall industry development, members in every association are moved by her enthusiasm and selflessness.
With everyone's encouragement, Chou Shui-Mei went on to integrate Taiwan's commercial district industries, promoting comprehensive tourism internationalization and sustainable operations. Encompassing 48 commercial district industry federations and organizations across the six special municipalities, the "Taiwan Commercial District Tourism Development Federation" was established late last year with her serving as Chairperson, continuing her efforts for Taiwan's commercial district tourism development.
Chou Shui-Mei stated: "I am deeply grateful for the support and trust of many benefactors along the way. Combined with constant self-reflection and mindset adjustment, I have been able to effectively integrate market and consumer changes. Now, leading the Taiwan Commercial District Tourism Development Federation with the same diligence as running my own enterprise, I insist that local commercial districts must preserve their unique traditional cultures while simultaneously building modern thinking to reach the international stage together." Of course, Chou Shui-Mei is well aware of the severe impact of the current pandemic on commercial district industries, with the hotel industry hit even harder. She recently co-planned the "Taipei Staycation Festival" with the Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism and the Federation. With international travel largely restricted and Taiwan's pandemic situation relatively stable, this initiative integrates nearly 150 Taipei hospitality operators with economical accommodation rates, jointly promoting the Staycation Festival along with high-quality, in-depth commercial district activities, so that "Taipei residents support Taipei" - not only satisfying travelers' enjoyment but also boosting the revival of Taipei's hospitality industry. Chou Shui-Mei has many more innovative ideas ahead - let's stay tuned.
