Ibusuki is a well-known tourist city located at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is famous for Ibusuki Onsen, particularly its renowned hot sand baths.
Due to its warm climate, the area calls itself "Japan's Hawaii." To encourage casual dress and save on air conditioning, the mayor issues an annual "Aloha Declaration" in late May, declaring Hawaiian shirts as official attire for the city hall and banks.
The area is also the hometown of Tenshoin Atsuhime, the official wife of the 13th Tokugawa Shogun Iemochi, and home to the Imaizumi Shimazu clan from the late Edo period. JR's southernmost station in Japan, Nishi-Oyama Station, and the largest lake in Kyushu, Lake Ikeda, are both located here.
